S.L. Welsh’s speculative fiction time portal fantasy in the subgenre of magic realism, "In the Absence of Heaven”, features a young Appalachian female protagonist from the 1980s, Birdie Belle Tillerman.
Birdie takes readers along as she jumps between reality and fantasy on her quest of self-preservation, identity, and empowerment in a trope cocktail of mystery, crime, dystopia, generational cycles of abuse, and supernatural forces.
Novel is scheduled for completion in Spring of 2026.
