Weaving Wings

A Writer Is Born

  • S.L. Welsh began talking at seven months old but by the age of four trauma silenced her voice until her grandmother taught her how to use writing as a form of communication.

  • During kindergarten, she spoke again but preferred to write. It was safe. And the blank pages begged her to share secrets.  She obliged.

  • Three years passed before her grandmother gave her a blue Smith Corona typewriter. It sounded strong. Like a train! So, she hid away in the attic and clacked the keys amazed it kept pace with her imagination.

  • Empowerment filled her little soul as trauma, words, reality, and fantasy intertwined to give her a sense of self - a  set of wings to lift her above the madness surrounding her.

  • S.L. Welsh transformed into a writer.

Teen Runaway

  • At fifteen, she witnessed & endured enough abuse to last a lifetime She physically rebelled, waved goodbye to childhood & believed in herself. S.L. Welsh was a teen runaway.

  • No one came looking for her. She was on her own & it felt good - even when bad things happened because she discovered family is defined by love - not DNA.

  • Through all the hardships of raising herself & learning to unlearn generational cycles of abuse, S.L. Welsh kept working, learning, dreaming & weaving her wings. Most importantly, she kept writing.

Empowered Woman

  • Even though those cycles of abuse proved overpowering at times she kept fighting to break them & the decision to be the first woman in her family to attend college was the catalyst for escape.

  • S.L. Welsh attended Wilson College - an all-women's college as a young single mother. The safe & supportive environment encouraged her creativity. There she shifted the focus to her intellect & the craft of writing as she earned an AA in Mass Communications.

  • Years later, she returned to school after raising two daughters & today, she has a grandson, along with a BA in Mass Comm & Professional Writing (summa cum laude) & a CRTT Online Teaching of Writing Certificate from SNHU.

  • But she is not done. S.L. Welsh is on track to receive her MFA in Creative Writing from SNHU on May 1, 2026, plans to teach others all about the craft of writing & hopes to inspire others with her journey to becoming an empowered woman & writer.
