S.L. Welsh Bio

A Writer Is Born

  • S.L. Welsh began talking at seven months. By four, trauma silenced her, but, not for long. She learned to write.

  • At five, she spoke again, but preferred writing. It was safe and released her from fear.

  • At eight, S.L. Welsh received a blue Smith Corona typewriter. It sounded like the train chugging on the highline beside her house.

  • She felt empowered despite the madness of home as reality and fantasy danced together to form words on blank paper.

  • By fourteen, S.L. Welsh told everyone, "I am a writer."

Runaway Train

  • By fifteen, she rebelled and ran away from abuse, taking only poetry, a guitar, clothing, and a typewriter.

  • Lots of bad things happened, but S.L. Welsh learned. She wrote  and discovered the healing power of writing. She survived and matured.

  • In the midst of maturing into a young woman, she discovered real family was defined by love, not DNA.

  • By nineteen, she wrote poetry every day and became pregnant.

Empowered Woman

  • As a newly single mother, S.L. Welsh vowed to be the first woman in her Appalachian family to attend college. She was determined to give her daughter a strong female role model.

  • She left the relationship and lived in a domestic violence shelter for three months with her child.

  • S.L. Welsh enrolled at Wilson College, an all-women's college, after securing a safe and loving home.

  • The supportive staff and students, in addition to the beautiful campus of Wilson inspired her creativity, She was published in the Billboard Review, twice, and earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Mass Communications.

  • A lifetime later, she returned to school after raising two daughters. She graduated summa cum laude with a BA in Communications/Professional Writing and a CRTT Online Teaching of Writing Certificate from SNHU.

  • Soon, she will graduate with a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing from SNHU with plans to become a professor of writing, published author, and owner of a publishing company for speculative fiction poetry and prose works with poetic craft elements.

  • S.L. Welsh hopes to inspire you with this short bio because she wants you to know you can achieve empowerment by embracing your authentic self and sharing your voice, even if others try to silence you.
